The HDC crochet stitch, abbreviated HDC, is one of the first crochet stitches you should learn when you're learning how to crochet. This stitch is taller than a single crochet and shorter than a double crochet. It's easy to work and is basically just a double crochet stitch without the final yarn over.
This tutorial is for a US half double crochet stitch, which is the same as a UK half treble crochet stitch. There are US crochet terms and UK crochet terms, so make sure you check your pattern to see which terms they are using. Trust me, I've made that mistake more times than I'd like to admit. Follow the tutorial below to learn how to half double crochet.

Half Double Crochet In 4 Simple Steps
Follow the tutorial below to learn how to HDC.
Step 1: Yarn Over
Wrap the working yarn around your hook from the back over the front.
Step 2: Insert Hook In Next Stitch
With the yarn still wrapped around the hook, insert the crochet hook under both loops of the next stitch. Make sure that the hook goes through both loops of the stitch.
Step 3: Yarn Over And Pull Up A Loop
With the hook still through the next stitch, yarn over just like you did in step one by wrapping the yarn around the crochet hook. Then, pull up that yarn loop through the stitch. You will now have three loops on your crochet hook.
Step 4: Yarn Over And Pull Through All Loops
Yarn over by wrapping the yarn around the crochet hook. Then pull that yarn through all three loops on your hook. You will be left with one loop on your hook, and that is the end of the HDC stitch.
Practice. Practice. Practice.
Remember, it takes practice to get used to a new crochet stitch. It can feel a bit weird at first, especially if you're new to crochet, but as you continue to practice, you'll get the hang of it. The HDC crochet stitch is a great option for a lot of different crochet projects. A lot of patterns call for this stitch, so it's good to get a feel for it when you're just beginning to crochet.
