Crochet Beanie How To
There are two main ways to make a crochet hat: flat and in the round. The Tweedledum Beanie is crocheted flat and sewn together at the end. This method avoids decreases and crown shaping at the end. To start, you'll create a chain. Then you will crochet in rows until you've reached your desired length. Next, the beanie is sewn together along the sides and pulled together at the top. Follow the step-by-step crochet hat pattern, free below, to create your very own crochet hat.
Ribbed Suzette Stitch
This beanie is worked in a ribbed suzette stitch. The suzette stitch is my favorite crochet stitch to use. It creates a very pretty texture, and it's very easy to do. It's just a single crochet stitch, and a double crochet stitch worked in every other stitch. It creates a lovely, raised texture.
I was playing around with crochet stitches one day and decided to try working the suzette stitch in the back loop only, and it created an even prettier texture. Thus, the Tweedledee Beanie was born.

Instructions
Turning chains never count as a stitch
Chain 39
Foundation Row: Work 1 Sc and 1 Dc in second chain from hook. (Skip 1, work 1 Sc and 1 Dc in next stitch) repeat until 1 stitch from end. Sc in last stitch. [39]
Rows 1 - 56: Chain 1 and turn work. (Skip 1 stitch, work 1 Sc and 1 Dc in the back loop only of next stitch) repeat until 1 stitch from end. Sc in back loop only of last stitch. [39] (This row makes up the ribbed suzette stitch)
Finishing Hat:
Sc along the bottom of the hat (along the long end). This will clean up the bottom edge of the hat. (This image is of the hat folded in half, but it will be unfolded when you work the Sc border.
Fold the hat in half and Sc through both end pieces to join the two sides of the hat. (Along the dotted line).
Close Hat:
Flip the hat inside out and stitch together the top opening. Skip 2 stitches each time you insert the needle.
Pull the yarn tight to cinch the top closed.
Secure The Opening
Insert the needle into the opposite side of the bottom end of the work.
Pull the two sides together.
Insert the needle into the places where the arrows point to. One at the center front and one at the center back of the hat. Pull all four corners together and tie off yarn.
